Embroidery Guild Felt Making

On Wednesday 26th of October Bridget
came to speak to our local Branch of The Embroiderers Guild,
in Kings Lynn. Bridget spoke to us about the history
in general of felting and then also about East Anglian
Felting History, especially Norwich which was
really interesting.
She then got us down to work making, Felt Flowers.
She had brought all the equipment with her
and it wasn't long before we were
'Faffing', a technical term picked up by Sandra!
and tufting our wool tops into circle shapes,
on bubble wrap, as you can see above.
It was then sponging them down with soapy water
and rolling and rolling out a couple of hundred times.
This was fun watching as I went around the room
taking photographs.
Even though I have made lots of felt myself
it is wonderful taking part in a group activity
and I had not made these type of flower before.
We then soaked our little bits of damp fluff in
clean water and worked into them, pulling and
stretching them tighter and into flower shapes as they
began to shrink.
These we then shaped around or fingers or pens to form a
centre of the flower and secured with elastic bands.
We all had a lovely time and all went home with
extra pieces of wool top to make stamens or centres
and a lovely sturdy brooch pin to sew on the back.
My flower is the top purple flower,
looking a bit wild! with its unusual petals!

Embellished Flowers

(click on the image to enlarge)
This is the start of a new series of work preparing for an Exhibition
next year based on my 'Art To Embellishment'.
I am experimenting with combining my painting and embellishing.
Some of the images I have taken from photos and sketches
I took or drew in our garden and the gardens we visited this year.
I have still got to add the machine embroidery and the bead embroidery.
I love textures,
so I am enjoying using the different textile techniques.

Dunbheagan Open Gardens

After Sunday lunch Stewart and I decided to go and visit
an Open Garden near Dereham, about 25 miles away.
The weather had become sunny and it was a lovely drive there.
The Open Garden Scheme is so special.
People open their gardens on behalf of Charities and
it is advertised in The National Garden Scheme, Yellow Book.
This is the garden of Jean and John Walton.
They were raising money for the
St Johns Ambulance.
It was wonderful, full of Blooms and so much interest,
even Carnivorous plants.
It was very popular and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
There was music being played by The Reepham Ensemble.
A very lovely afternoon.

Friday Gallery Day 30th July 2010

On Friday I went to the Gallery to organise some of the
art materials
and equipment for Workshop Sessions.
Lots of wonderful stuff had been put away in the
storage containers due to the different exhibitions that
had been going on at The Gallery and the space was required.
We had forgotten which art materials were in which box!!!
I really enjoyed the day sorting and finding out
what there was.
Judy and Haydn were so busy as usual but
look what they gave me to say Thank you for what I do,
a beautiful bunch of flowers and yummy
box of chocolates.
Thank you Judy and Hadyn, they are really appreciated.

Liz and The Flower Girls

Along with the Round Robin Reveal we had a full packed evening with notices,
Show and Tell and Exhibition details.
Our big Exhibition is the 23rd and 24th of October 2010.
Our theme is,
"An English Country Garden",
so we have started
collecting and making relevant items for it,
as well as making quilts, wallhangings and
articles for stalls and raffles.
The Exhibition is held in The Porters Barn in Feltwell.
It is a Medieval Tithe Barn so we have to hang alot of work!
Here Liz is teaching some of the members how to make
tissue paper flowers. They looked fantastic
and will look great on the stage area.
The ones in the flower pots were made by
Jill and she gave us all the pattern so we can go away
and make our own!
I have got to come up with the
back drop of a Country Cottage!

Tulips

Inside Sally-Ann's Blue studio it was beautifully presented
with all her work and inspiration.
Textiles galore, pictures and sketchbooks.
The tulip embroidered textile above was the inspiration
for a rag rug Sally-Ann was working on and next year she will be exhibiting
pictures from the same inspiration.
After a cup of coffee and a chat we wandered back down her garden.
To get in the mood with" Tulips from Amsterdam",
this video has wonderful displays as well as artwork.

Iris Photograph

These Iris's have been beautiful every year and I keep dividing
them and moving them round the garden.
These are in the long flower bed which was
completely re-designed this year.
I just love how exotic they look.
I have been making fabric 'Garden' pages and have
made several inspired by the Iris,
in the different colours.

Flower Sections

Just had to take it to bits and disect it!

New Inspiration, Flower

It's the 25th today a month after Christmas and its also Burn's Night today, the celebration for those of Scottish descent. Have a good celebration!
It's gone so quickly already!
New Inspiration
I found this flower decoration on the second hand stall on Swaffham market on Saturday, for 20p. It just yelled at me to be used. I think it's the green lacy metallic leaves that drew me in.
