Mixed Media Machine Embroidered Tree

Pat has also finished and had framed one of her Mixed Media
machine Embroidered Trees.
Isn't it wonderful?
Pat has transferred her skills as a painter beautifully
into mixed media textiles.

Gallery Day 21st June 2011

Pat is making this mixed media textile wallhanging,
on the right and has been doing other projects in between.
Often new techniques and how to progress takes a little
time and then the next stage evolves and comes to light.
The trees are now applied and the backing and
finishing stitches are nearly there.
It is a beautiful one of a kind and
I haven't seen anything like it before.
It is amazing.
Well done Pat!
The piece above is a confetti textile,
stitches and embellishments
underneath a light gauze and then more
mixed media on top.
I love to see these layering textiles.

Embroided Mixed Media Tree

Pat has been away for a few weeks but look what she
has been making and it is ready for framing.
It is a single mixed media tree.
She is still working on the layering of her
wall hanging which contains
four similar trees to the one above.

Mixed Media Trees

Pat is adding the texture to the background fabric, so her trees
become 'grounded',
(see earlier posts by clicking label below, textile trees).
She is sewing on threads and snippets in a circular motion
so there is movement in the piece.
The trees have just been pinned on at this point.
To see where to go next and how much depth
Pat needed to add, I got her to masking tape
the wall hanging to the wall and
then stand at the other end of the room.
Pat, could see, it needed deeper colour stitching, more
circles and where they needed to go.
As you walk nearer the piece you can pick up the details
and richness already there.
Pat worked on it all morning, many more hours to add
but this piece is becoming an outstanding one!
Well done Pat!
I will grab it for it's finish photo soon!!!

Design to Art Quilt

As you can see Pat has finished making her mixed media textile
trees and they are now ready for the background.
The background is calico dyed and painted in several layers
to build up colour
in certain areas, and to signify borders.
The centre of the wallhanging is all threads and strands of fabric,
machine stitched and embellished onto felt.
Pat is going to take these out in a circle to the border.
This is a piece which needed the design process to
bring ideas together and to choose the different
ways the piece could go.
The design element of any artwork can happen at the
beginning and often at many different stages of development.
Standing back and often walking away leaving the piece
on show allows you to discover more about the artwork or
develop a different technique approach.
Sampling on a mock up really helps.
Not all art making is clear cut and can teach all
of us many different things along the way
by trying different techniques before settling on the next step,
Experimenting is one of the beauties of ART.

Gallery Day 1st of March 2011

Lots of Mixed Media going on at the Tuesday morning session
@ The Gallery Dereham.
These are three of Pat's mixed textile trees above.
She has one more to do and then it is working on
the background fabric to give it the same depth of colour and richness
but still leaving the variation, so the trees shine.
'Grounding' them, as a fellow textile artist called Judy.
(She explains this so well).
