Crazy Patchwork Book Cover

Pat loves trying all the different creative techniques and
some she likes doing but doesn't want to make then into
anything. She had collected several samples and so decided
to put them into a fabric book which she could add pages to
as and when.
We make fabric books on Level One City and Guilds
so samples are small but are part of an item that can be
continued. Its great choosing a theme or colour
so then it doesn't matter what technique you try you can add them
to your book and they are small so can be finished in a short period
of time.

Monday City and Guilds Textiles

City and Guilds Creative Textiles is half way through now and
everyone has lots of work to show and are really cracking on
with their projects. There is techniques to learn each week
and students also bring in items that they 'Show and Tell',
that is relevant to the session. This week it was buttons,
Hence the buttons on the bag and Twisted Squares and Hexagons.
I started teaching with origami and then went through to showing
how to make the fabric folded squares and hexagons.
Everyone has enjoyed the challenge and like the little bit
of 'magic'.

Circles in Textiles

City and Guilds Creative Textiles cover many areas
of making textiles and techniques.
This week, along with circles of all descriptions,
we have been looking at Fastenings.
Buttons, pop studs, hooks, eyes and zips etc.
It's a chance to make and learn different ways of using them.
Also, have the opportunity to use different feet on a sewing machine.
Above, you can see a mixture of artwork and samples.
While looking through some students found antique
fastenings in their collections.
It was great to see and also date some of them too!

Marking City and Guilds

Well, look at this lovely site. All eighteen students work, stitchbooks, files and sketchbooks laid out across my table ready for marking. It was a hard job to do as the standard was so high. Everyone did fantastic and for such a short course, only eight weeks. Each page of the stitchbooks are treasures. I am lucky enough as the tutor to have to hold on to this work until the end of the Summer so they are available for the examiners to mark and I take a section to Norwich for outside verifier's to mark.
The Stitchbooks will be on show to the public for two weeks, in my studio for The Norfolk Open Studios. Well done to everyone who took part.

City and Guilds first Taster Course Completed @The Gallery

The first City and Guilds Level One in Machine Embroidery and Patchwork and Quilting finished @ The Gallery and everyone felt happy with what they have been able to do in just eight weeks!
I have taught the techniques and design every week with them and their samples have all gone to make wonderful books, their 3D item. Every book is individual even though they were doing the same technique. Everyone has chosen different subjects and colours to portray their work to. We finished at lunch time and then waited for the news paper photographer to come along and you can see a full article HERE
Congratulations to all the students. The Level Two City and Guilds in Machine Embroidery and Patchwork and Quilting start in September 2012 at the Gallery on a Monday and Wednesday. I look forward to teaching those classes.

City and Guilds Colour Wheel and Machining

I love colour so when showing and explaining the Colour Wheel there is lots of ways to enjoy doing it.
We start on paper but then it turns to printing, dyeing threads and fabrics and of course ultimately to stitch and machining. Using materials and threads you have created yourself just makes it even more interesting and unique.

City and Guilds 8 Week Taster Course

Part of the City and Guilds Courses there are sections for exploring different techniques every session. I love setting up the art table and showing some basic ideas and then watching what everyone comes up with and the different combinations of techniques depending on what subject students have chosen to discover or develop. Here, they were using transfer crayons and paints.

Wednesday Course Prep

After card class I have been doing Course Prep so
that people who were unable to come along on the
Tuesdays and want to put portfolios together, sampling or
learn machine skills they can.
The sessions are from 11.30 until 2.45 and
are on until the City and Guilds Awards Level One and Two
start on Wednesday 28th March 2012.
The Awards are for 8 weeks and then they will
start again in September along with City and Guilds.
Please contact myself or The Gallery if you are
interested in these courses.

Good News

I went to Wensum Lodge, The Adult Education Centre,
in Norwich.
I went to start the next step of starting the
City and Guilds for
Machine Embroidery and Patchwork and Quilting
@ The Gallery Dereham.
The meeting went really well and the Award Levels
can start at the end of March, after everything is put
in place.
If you are Norfolk you will be able to participate
in these courses.
They will be on a Wednesday.
The Awards, cover the basics of the Guilds, similar
to a taster.
Great News for all that want to start gaining
educational certificate recognition for their
work.

City and Guilds Event

On the 11th of November I went to a City and Guilds
Open Event at St Ives (Cambridgeshire)
because I am considering becoming
a centre for offering certificates in the Creative Textiles Field.
I had a very informative day and I am definitely qualified and
so I am going to go through the process.
It is so exciting, finally I may be able to offer certificates
for Embroidery, Patchwork and Quilting and Creative Textiles.
I am looking into offering 30 hour courses as well as the longer
City and Guilds full certificates.
So watch this space!
