Kings Lynn Embroiderers Guild Exhibition 2013

The Kings Lynn Embroiderers Guild Exhibition this year
was lucky enough to exhibit the Guild Members collection
of Olympic Postcards.
The postcards were on display at The Olympics and
they are now part of the Guilds permanent collection.
Each Guild Group was given a country and then members had to depict
it, in stitch within the postcard format.
There were so many it was hard to choose a favourite.
The Members work was diverse and individual as always.
I had submitted pieces for the table.
A Lace Book, a Sketchbook exploring Metal Work Textiles
and a Contemporary Suffolk Puff and Embroidered Panel.
The cakes were delicious and sparkly,
I just had to have one with my tea!
What an inspirational exhibition!

Silk Painting with Rose Martin

Rose Martin came along to The Kings Lynn Embroiderer's Guild and spoke to us, showed some of her work and gave us a demo on silk painting. As she talked about her work she passed around her silk pieces and they were wonderful to touch and were very artistically done. When she came to the demo she got straight on in there and helped many of us dismiss the apprehension of drawing straight onto fabric. She had a lovely way. Due to time she showed us also how to cover up the ultimate mistakes when silk paints decide to jump a gutter barrier and reminded us of our colour wheel options too.
A wonderful re-introduction to silk painting for us.
Rose also opens her studio to the public click HERE to see.

Textured Textiles

Elisabeth Hennessey came along to The Kings Lynn Embroiderers Guild to give us a Saturday workshop on Textured Textiles. She spoke to us about her work and around the room there were different activities to do with looking at how we create textiles and the making of. Her work has a lot of surface decoration and she specialises in stitch. We had so much fun rubbing, painting, sharing thread and textures. Our sketchbooks were brimming over with ideas.

Norwich Maddermarket Theatre Costumes

Amanda, the costume mistress and designer from the Norwich Maddermarket Theatre came along to The Kings Lynn Embroiderers Guild to show us some of the costumes, tell us some of the stories behind them and how she puts together costumes for the show.  As you can see by the photographs, Amanda dressed a model and acted in some of the costumes to bring them alive. The theatre puts on around 12 plays a year and Amanda has £200 to spend on costumes for each show, so there is a lot of recycling going on. There are over 50,000 pieces of costume in the theatres storeroom and many are recycled over and over again in different ways to fit a show. Many of the costumes and accessories are vintage and original for the era, Edwardian, Victorian, 1940 dresses for example and all their extras. The oldest piece of accessory they have, is a 1730 Dorset Button, which Amanda passed around the audience for us to look at. It was a miniature button and had exquisite stitches. Amanda was wearing a beautiful Victorian style brooch which several of us admired and she told us it was from a friend who makes jewellery. See the website HERE
Thank you Amanda for such a wonderful evening.

Kings Lynn Embroidery Guild

On the 29th February was The Kings Lynn Embroidery Guild
meeting and Pauline Wrighton came along to,
'Share a Stitch', which meant her giving a short talk
on how she became a full time artist and then
putting her 11 years of sketchbooks and workbooks
on the tables so that we could look through and be inspired.
Pauline came round and chatted and gave us some great
tips.
The one for me was to buy similar ring bound sketchbooks
and cut between the rings so that the pages
can be taken out and moved around as necessary,
especially when comprising a themed book!
Thank you Pauline for an interesting evening.

Embroidery Guild Exhibition

The third exhibition I got to see on Friday was the
a selection of members from The Kings Lynn Embroidery Guild.
They were exhibiting in the Kings Lynn Museum.
A wonderful display of mixed media textiles,
many intricately covered with embroidery and stitch.
sadly because of the museum location and exhibits my photos
are rather dark and doesn't show the some vivid colours
used, such as the vibrant orange velvet, dyed and
stitched by Sandra Beech.

Steve Pretty Making Braids

Wednesday evening it was the once a month meeting for
The Kings Lynn Embroidery Guild.
This month Steve Pretty was talking and demonstrating
Braid and Cord Making.
He has an extensive collection of equipment for
making Braids, Cords and Narrow Wares,
(anything woven under 6").
We were in for a surprise when he handed out
packs of thread and a card hand loom for us all to use.
He showed us how to use it and we were away.
He divided us in two groups and one half had to
carry on braiding and the other half he showed us how to
make cords.
We had a really interesting evening,
Thank you Steve.
