Indigo and Shibori

I finished this wall hanging out of all the Shibori and Indigo Dyeing.

I had made in previous sessions. 

I have been teaching 101 ways of stitching, tying and folding

fabric for dye patterns.

Dyeing Fabric Day

After doing a few jobs in the garden I decided to do

some fabric dyeing. I had been thinking about it for

a few weeks and had got all the things together.

I had use Dylon Dyes, that I had some from previous

dye day along with a couple I had been given.

I fix them with salt and soda, so it is really easy to do.

I used old cotton sheets and some dyed fabrics which

were a little pale from last time, these were

all dyed in plastic bags.

Each bag has some dye put in and the salt and soda

and given a good mix, you can either add the fabric or

mix in some cold water to dilute the colour.

Leave to cure!

I love rinsing the fabrics out and hanging on the line to see

the colour range.

I dyed blues, reds, yellows, green and purple

with a few mixed shades in between.

On the line above you can see the yellows going into

orange and red.

Indian Textile History

We were told at our Alveva Quilters meeting by

Linda Turner of a wonderful programme about

Indian Textiles and their history.

I have just watched it and it is amazing.

Indigo Dyeing Workshop

On Saturday I went over to Rockland Allsaints to the studio of Marion Baker,

whose studio I had visited on the Norfolk Open Studio scheme.

Marion and Sally Mills were giving a Shibori Indigo workshop.

Well, what a day, of learning so many techniques,

laughing and sharing in the sweltering heat.

Perfect day for Dyeing though and drying fabrics.

The Indigo Vats were set and ready and the magic began.

Putting our prepared stitched and wrapped fabrics

in and watching them change colour in front of our eyes.

The deep rich blue, Indigo is famous for.

We had a wonderful lunch in the garden under the shade of some trees.

But we couldn't unveil our treasures as they have to dry and cure

for a few days. I am going to open mine this afternoon.

I'll post my results soon.

Shibori Fish

Mum and I decided to visit the studio of Marion Baker

and Sally Mills who are artists participating

in The Norfolk Open Studios

at The Coach House at Rocklands.

The journey here was through some lovely countryside.

Their studio was welcoming and had lots of inspiration on display.

I have booked in for a weekend in July

for an Indigo and Shibori workshop on the Saturday

and a crochet workshop on the Sunday.

The Shibori Fish above was designed and made by

Sally Mills.

Thank you Sally and Marion for such a lovely visit.
