Yvonne's Quilt Show and Tell

Yvonne is Chair at Alveva and a famous UK Quilt Artist.
She will be exhibiting at the NEC this month.
She showed us her quilt she had just finished using silk squares
and cream print fabric she had been collecting for years.
It is a really modern quilt and was inspired by the talk by Lucy Summers
earlier in the year.

March Alveva Meeting

I belong and Chair Alveva Quilters  which meets the third Wednesday of most months in Feltwell, Norfolk. Our speaker had to cancel due to ill health and so, two of our members, Yvonne and Liz stepped into the breach after 'Show and Tell', to give us demonstrations on, 'Screen Printing Basics' and 'Hand Quilting'. Their Talks were really interesting and informative, the group had a lovely evening.

Get Well Wishes to Christine Davey and hopefully she will be able to talk to the group at another time.

See Yvonnes blog at www.yvonnedbrown.blogspot.com
Also see the video she made with Bonnie McCaffrey on my tech site by clicking the link below. It is a fantastic video and Yvonne shows her Medieval Tile Technique.

Work made at Yvonne's Workshop

Here are the beginings and some of the finished tiles.
I always take my workshop inspiration into ideas
that I am working on and develop them personally.
We initially drew our chosen designs onto
light weight vylene or Stitch and Tear.
This is placed on the back and the felt is placed
on the front, coloured side up.
You then free machine around the design.
The next step is to burn away the excess felt with
the soldering iron. Then using a heat gun
melt away certain areas to make the piece look old.
I then used inks and paints to add details with
stencils and stamps.
Thank you Yvonne for such a lovely day.

Yvonne Brown's Studio

On December the 2nd five of us were able to have a workshop
day in Yvonne Brown's studio,
'Woods End'.
We were learning her,
'Tile' Technique, which is from her book
' Tex-tiles and other techniques'.
Yvonne showed us lots of her different work
as inspiration.
It was a lovely day and we all learnt lots.

Yvonne Brown's Talk at Alveva Quilters September Meeting

We were lucky at the September Alveva Meeting as we
had Yvonne Brown gives us a talk on her
trip to New Zealand for the Quilt Symposium.
She was one of the Tutors at the event.
Yvonne was the originator of
Alveva Quilters and is also our President.
She has contributed so much to
Patchwork and Quilting.
She showed us slides of her trip and showed
us some of her new work including a commission piece
based on the Sutton Hoo Helmet.
Yvonne had also brought along
several copies of her book,
'Tex-tiles and other Treasure:
Using Medieval Tiles and Stonework'.
I brought a copy and she kindly signed it
for me!
I highly recommend it if you want to
experiment with heat and soldering techniques.
Thank you Yvonne for a lovely talk,
so inspirational.
You can buy her book and see
more of Yvonne's work on her
website

Alveva Quilters Meeting

Once a month on the third Wednesday Alveva Quilters
meets at The Methodist Chapel Hall in Feltwell at 7pm.
We have a really packed couple of hours.
This week we had amazing show and tell from all round the world.
Above Yvonne Brown told us how she grew as a teenager
in Nigeria and showed us some of the items of clothing
her father had been given.
It had been a real honour by the village. The embroidery was
amazing.
The trouser suit above was made by Yvonne, her sister and
Mother with material they used to buy from the
market there. They must have been really trendy!
More show and tell in other posts.
