City and Guilds Textiles Begins

On the 28th of March the City and Guilds eight week Level One for Machine Embroidery and Patchwork and Quilting started with me @The Gallery. 19 students all excited and apprehensive started their venture into Textiles Creative Diplomas, (that's the title for these courses and how they are grouped). For eight weeks they will have a taster of different textile techniques related to the skill they have chosen, Machine Embroidery or Patchwork and Quilting. Both have creative fabric decoration and samples to produce as well as a file or sketchbook as a record of what they are learning. I am one of those tutors who prefers to encourage students to make samples and explore techniques then put them in a fabric book rather than in plastic pockets! The books become heirlooms in their own right and are added to regularly. I have seen this with previous students of mine. With two groups technically going on in the same classroom I have to be very organised but what I have found before that there is a cross fertilisation of ideas and techniques between the groups and all benefit because they incorporate skills that they would not necessary try before. It makes for more creative and imaginative work.
The course has now finished with 18 completing the course. It was a fun and very creative eight weeks the photographs of the class and their books on my website. I will post more of the classes as I continue to update my blog.

Jeanetta Sculpiturio

I put on exhibit @The Gallery my new mixed media sculpture,
'Jeanetta Sculpiturio'.
It is a column 6ft tall and 16' wide.
Inspired by architecture, Venice,
intricate surfaces, jewellery and
Jeanette, one of my students!
Jeanette makes wonderful mixed media textile pieces
such as 'Bolliwood' and 'Leaves'.
See HERE
She also makes
intricate textile boxes.
Jeanette starts in a similar way to I do, with the inspiration.
Then collects lots of medias together and then compiles
ideas and sections together.
Where we differ and what makes me chuckle is,
Jeanette hates painting and getting messy!
I love paint, inks and getting stuck in with gooeyness!
I will work on this with her as she has expressed
that she wants to make a section of the sculpture
which has painted lace arches on, so we shall see!

Jeanette working in mixed media

This week @The Gallery, Jeanette started using the
soldering iron on the edges of her Leaves Wall Hanging.
It is starting to take on a 3D effect but needs
a focus of interest.
Nearly there but not quite!

Jeanette is building up her picture with the mixed media
textile leaves now.
You sometimes get to a stage where you can't see where
a piece is going or how to move it on.
When she un wrapped it there was a wow! from those
in the Gallery but Jeanette wasn't happy with how the piece
looked. We analysed it and it was too flat.
and needed a focus.
Yes, it looked like falling leaves but it needed a focal point
and lift. Jeanette and I spent a few hours
working out focal areas and making the piece 3D.
Jeanette makes fantastic 3D textile artworks.
her most recent, "Bolliwood", was entered into an art show
and was well received.
Keep persevering Jeanette it is working!

Machine Stitches and Tips

With all the fun happening there is some serious creating too!
here Ann is machine quilting, notice her good posture.
TIPS: Always sit in a good chair with good support,
add a cushion where necessary.
Your machine should be in front of you an inch away from the edge
of the table and the needle directly in front of wear your nose
is looking.
Place your hands n a triangle shape around your needle,
this defines a quilting area.
From time to time stop and wiggle your shoulders up and down
and smile :), loosen your facial muscles too.
It is surprising what we tension when we are
concerntrating.
Have regular breaks to relieve muscles and brain.
Open up the work and smooth out front and back,
re- pin or baste if necessary.

Gallery day 14th June 2011

Gallery Day was a bit quiet this week as some of the group
were on holiday.
Pat and Sylvia took the opportunity to work on the machines and
get to grips with new techniques.
The patchwork square above is 19" by 19" and
was made out of the scraps from one of my 50p bags.
It took Sylvia an hour to choose where to put the pieces
and sew it together which seemed like magic to the others!
Sylvia loves patchwork and is now enjoying real
high colour in her work.
I wonder where that comes from?

Jeannette is starting a new project, a wall hanging
containing all different mixed media layered leaves.
There are many different techniques she wants to learn
and improve on ones that she has touched on in the past.
Here are some of the ones she made in her session.
The sessions @ The Gallery are approximately
2, 2 and a half hours long and some stay all day!
