March Alveva Meeting

I belong and Chair Alveva Quilters  which meets the third Wednesday of most months in Feltwell, Norfolk. Our speaker had to cancel due to ill health and so, two of our members, Yvonne and Liz stepped into the breach after 'Show and Tell', to give us demonstrations on, 'Screen Printing Basics' and 'Hand Quilting'. Their Talks were really interesting and informative, the group had a lovely evening.

Get Well Wishes to Christine Davey and hopefully she will be able to talk to the group at another time.

See Yvonnes blog at www.yvonnedbrown.blogspot.com
Also see the video she made with Bonnie McCaffrey on my tech site by clicking the link below. It is a fantastic video and Yvonne shows her Medieval Tile Technique.

Coven Quilters

Once a month I meet up with a group of
dear friends at Kate and Paddy's house to Quilt and Share.
We are lucky each month we meet we have a
Birthday to or special occasion to celebrate.
This month it was Liz's Birthday and she blew out the
candles in true tradition.
We 'Show and Telled' all evening, laughed as usual
until our sides hurt,
but also did some serious quilting and knitting!
Joan above is hand quilting using a quilting hoop.
Its always lovely to see people enjoying sharing
and creating!

Lily Wall Hanging Quilting

On Monday I put the borders on the 'Lily Wall Hanging'
by making my own quilting stencil.
I machine quilted the pattern of the lily over each window
and freemotion quilted the outer borders.
See it hanging in the classroom in this post

Alveva Quilt Group

Wednesday night was Alveva Quilter's once a month meeting.
I had been away on holiday for the last few meetings
so it was nice to catch up with everyone.
At Show and Tell Liz showed us her latest
acquisition from ebay.
A wholecloth quilt probably originally from Wales,
from the 19th Century.
It was beautiful, yellow on one side and a slate blue on the other.
Liz has a good selection of old British Quilts and is
available for talks.

More Cottage Flower Quilts

In between gardening today, I finished cutting and piecing
this next quilt today. It is made from the fabric scraps from of the
first Cottage Flower Quilt.
I used the similar brick path strip pattern but smaller,
than the first quilt.
(3 and a quarter" by 5").
The borders are yet to go on. I will hopefully
get round that tomorrow in between
more gardening and quilting.
The garden takes first priority when I am holiday from
work, so it is easy care the rest of the Summer.
More tomatoes, pumpkins and courgettes were
planted out today.
The runner beans need transplanting tomorrow,
if the weather is good.
We are picking Asparagus most days now.
Delicious!

Cottage Quilt

With all the gardening over the weekend I needed
to get back to quilting and here is a
quillow sized quilt inspired by cottage flowers.
It is made with 'brick' shaped blocks, each
5" by 10" and placed in strips. It is now ready for quilting.

Quilting Beginnings

This is the quilt sewn by the beginners in a few hours at the Weeting

Quilters meeting.

It was a wonderful meeting and all are welcome to help make,

donate fabrics and quilts for Ann's Legacy and in her words,

"To everyone who feels as compassionate about the situation of those forgotten people as I am, I give you my grateful thanks.

Weeting Quilting Group

I was invited along to Weeting Quilt Group on Monday.

They meet the second Monday of every month at Weeting Community Centre from 11.30am until 3pm. Everyone made me feel very welcome and we were all sewing almost straight away.

Even new ladies whom it was their first time were taken under several peoples wing

and showed how to choose fabric, cut sew and were soon machining strips together.

At lunch time we stopped for lunch of course but also 'Show and Tell'.

The reason I had been invited by Chris the organiser was to join in on a project started by Ann, Chris's dear friend who has just died from cancer, after just 12 weeks after being told.

She wanted to leave a legacy of quilts and quilt making for the victims of The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. It is 25 years after the event but the land will not be safe for

up to 600 years. Even though people are not living close to the area

the surrounding land is still contaminated.

The children have grown up and because they have had to eat the contaminated food and breathe the air they are having childbirth issues and their life expectancy and conditions mean many are placed in institutions for the rest of their lives.

Ann wanted to help a small local charity at Salters Lode to take warm quilts and

items when they go out to Belarus several times a year. So Chris is fulfilling her friends

wish and she showed us several of the quilts.

There will be a blog shortly so you can see the blog

and Anne's Legacy at work.

and so insightful

Coven Quilters with Kate's Quilt

This quilt has been another labour of love for Kate.
Machine pieced with many African fabrics.
Kate is now in the process of hand quilting it.
Kate had it basted together
(quilt front, wadding and backing put together)
by Jenny at Harmony Quilting
in Watton, Norfolk.
It has been done so well it will make
quilting so much easier.
I would have struggled even with my 8 ft table!
The quilt is for Kate's son.
Ooo isn't he lucky.
We are persuading Kate to put it in for the
Summer Samphire Exhibition as
work in progress!

Wholecloth Quilt Quilting

Here, Liz is continuing to hand quilting her wholecloth quilt.
She is so close to finishing. What a quilt!!!
See previous post for the details.
Well done again Liz!
