Paper Strips

Thursday I continued paper sorting and playing.
I love making background papers for mixed media
pieces and I have some new students who want to
start with papers and how to turn it into
works of art.
Here, I cut the newspaper into strips and then wove
them together to form a background.
This was then put onto to vilene and
I have stitched all over in straight stitch
and some patterned stitches to add interest.
This will be painted and then appliqued and
stitched.

Origami Colour Firework

I persevered with the origami firework.
These units start at a 16cm square which made the difference
for holding and as you can see
I made it in another colour combination.
I say I, Stewart got intrigued and helped fold the
units so far and then let me do the fiddly bits.
He then shuffled and folded the ends in while
I held it!
A two person task!!!!!
It starts looking like the top and then you twist it
inside itself and you get to the next photograph.
Due to this being a moveable origami it
looks better in film so watch
the film I put on a previous post by clicking

Origami Firework

Sometimes I like to set myself a challenge!
I have never really been that good at origami but I do
folded patchwork.
While researching folded papers I came across this......
"An Origami Firework",
Well! I just had to have a go.
What seem hours later after putting all the little
units together I finally and I mean finally,
got it to a stage where I could manipulate the flower,
I mean firework and what happened?
it started to fall apart and the more I tried to put
it together the more creases appeared.
All I can say watch the video and enjoy,
if you are going to make it I would try a larger
square to begin with!
I will have another go at this myself again
with a larger starting square and I will show you the results.
Enjoy this weekend project!!!!

Card Making with Concertina Folds

On Friday I went to Laina Crafts and Wool Shop in Downham Market
for a card making class with Elaine.
She had made several designs like the one above all
using different decoration techniques but all
using the concertina fold technique.
It was a lively class.
A really lovely group of ladies.
I didn't quite finish mine, so I did that last night.
I am really pleased with the finished card,
although it is not "really me!".
I really enjoyed learning all the different techniques
and I can see me using the separate techniques with
other medias.
Thank you, so much Elaine for a great
card making morning.

Sylvia making Paper and Stitch Flowers

Sylvia wanted a break from quilting and so for the last few weeks
has been getting to grips with machine embroidery and
mixed media combinations.
Here she is stitching her Paper and Stitch Flower together.
Mine is in front of her as a guide.
When I got the bead box out everyone had a rummage
through and found beads that were yummy!

Paper and Stitch Leaves

This morning I played on my sewing machine, using
some of my made paper.
Every Summer I make a batch of dyed fabric and made papers.
These, then keep me inspired and stocked
most of the Winter.
Here, I used my Autumn Sketchbook as inspiration.
The paper when stitch goes like leather.
You can use a good quality watercolour paper
and colour it with dye or paint to get a
similar effect.
Make sure you use a new needle in your machine.

Art Inspiration

It is sometimes good to go back to some of your favourite art pieces
when you are practising particular media.
I have used the Vintage Envelopes I made last year and my
Vintage Lace Collages as a
starting point and added it to the Inspiration from the
'Textile In Focus', exhibition.
Alongside ingredients I had in my stash to make
a 'Paper and Stitch', collaged journal cover.

Paper and Stitch

Inspired by Sharon I returned to paper and stitch.
This is a small sample 3" by 5".
It started off as brown paper, machined stitched and
soaked in water. You then remove sections and bits crumble off.
Allow to dry and then paint.
I then fuse to fabric and embellish with stitch and beading.
